Mr Michael Powar
Michael Powar has an international profile in the field of colorectal surgery. With almost 30 years of clinical experience, he has held a number of regional and national leadership positions, including Specialty Lead for Colorectal Surgery at Cambridge University Hospitals, Colorectal Teaching Lead at the University of Cambridge School of Clinical Medicine, and President-Elect of the Royal Society of Medicine Coloproctology Section.
He was appointed as a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at Addenbrooke's Hospital in 2012, following specialist fellowships at the world-renowned St Mark's and Royal Brisbane Hospitals.
His main clinical interests are in minimally invasive, robotic "keyhole" surgery for bowel cancer, inflammatory bowel disease and diverticular disease, and he led the introduction of robotic colorectal surgery at Cambridge University Hospitals. He provides a dedicated specialist private clinic offering a comprehensive and sensitive service covering a wide range of bowel and anal conditions. He is an experienced endoscopist and regularly performs colonoscopy to investigate changes in bowel habit and rectal bleeding.
He has particular expertise in the management of complex bowel function difficulties, including faecal incontinence. He was the first clinician to introduce sacral nerve stimulation for faecal incontinence in the East of England, and now leads one of the highest-volume sacral neuromodulation implanting centres for faecal incontinence globally.
He also has an active interest in surgical innovation to improve patient care, and is a key opinion leader providing consultancy and advisory board roles for a number of European, US and Asian MedTech and robotics companies.
